Fourteen-year-old Homer is the flag-bearer of death in Ithaca, an adjustment of William Saroyan’s novel The Human Comedy. Homer conveys wires in the mid ’40s that start with “The Department of War second thoughts” you know the rest.
Taped already as The Human Comedy in 1943, this resurrection is just about a casebook investigation of how not to transpose “writing” to film. An ardent yet saturated directorial debut by Meg Ryan, Ithaca is longwinded and static. Saroyan’s novel was a sharp spread on the delicacy of life in a universe of wild extremes and moving conditions.
